Colorado Roadless Rule and DEIS Available for Public Comment

Proposed Colorado Roadless Rule and Draft Environmental Impact Statement Available for Public Comment; Public Open Houses Planned

Denver, CO, July 25, 2008 – Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Department) published in the Federal Register the proposed Colorado Roadless Rule to address the management of roadless areas on National Forest System (NFS) lands within the state of Colorado. The associated draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) is posted on the U.S. Forest Service Web site at http://roadless.fs.fed.us/colorado.shtml

People will have 90 days to comment on the proposed Colorado Roadless Rule. The comment period for the DEIS will begin on the day the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency publishes the Notice of Availability (NOA) in the Federal Register and will end the same day as the comment period for the Rule, which is October 23, 2008.

AGENCY: USDA Forest Service.
ACTION: Final rule.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY: The Department of Agriculture is moving the Forest Service's National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) codifying procedures from Forest Service Manual (FSM) 1950 and Forest Service Handbook (FSH) 1909.15. In addition to codifying the procedures, the Department is clarifying and expanding them to incorporate Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) guidance and to better align Forest Service NEPA procedures with its decision processes.

A "news release" from the Department of Energy is included below.

Apparently, the Department of Energy (DOE) is considering issuing "funding opportunities" to groups that can figure out a method of "...increasing the use of traditional hydrothermal and geothermal" projects under a "demonstration project" concept "...in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance our energy security."

There are numerous existing technologies in world-wide daily application that do generate electrical power from hydrothermal and geothermal resources.
