Pain at the pump -- Stop SB 350

The majority party (Democrat Party) is, at the same time,  pushing for a 12 cents per gallon increase in the gas tax we all pay at the pump to backfill the money they have diverted from infrastructure projects.   Other tax increases they have proposed include a 22 cent per gallon increase on diesel fuel, a $35 increase in vehicle registration fees, a $100 zero emission vehicle fee, and a $35 dollar per vehicle annual road usage charge. These taxes will be devastating to individuals and families who are already on a tight budget, and punish rural Californians who have to drive farther to get to work or their kids to school.   The double whammy of reducing available fuel and increasing taxes will veer California’s economy off the road.   These increased taxes and regulations will punish hardworking Californians who are trying to earn a living and take their kids to school.   The majority party has designed these tax increases to skirt Proposition 13 so they won’t need to be approved by voters.   We have to get the message to them that the taxpayers do not support these tax increases. Don’t let them tax you without hearing from you.   You can sign the online petition here from CA State Senator Joel Anderson.

IS GOVERNMENT LISTENING TO THE USERS?

WORRIED ABOUT THE RUBICON TRAIL?

I left my leadership position in Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) and the Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) a few years back, thinking that we had laid a positive foundation to continue these incredible efforts to keep the Rubicon Trail open to all of us...all year; for all types of rigs; with challenges for us all. NOT THE CASE!!! I am sorely disappointed in the way the trail has changed in the last few years, and I am not afraid to step up and say that government is NOT listening to the users.  Not in this case.  Something is wrong and we need to bring some slap down on the deaf ones who "govern" our use of public lands in the case of the Rubicon Trail.

To litigate, or not to litigate, that is the question

To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them. Hamlet's soliloquy poses a complex question that can be re-phrased: To litigate, or not to litigate, that is the question...A complex question that needs some background to explain.  The California OHV program was created in 1971 as a self-funded program.  The primary funding is derived from registration of off-road vehicles, entries fees to State Vehicle Recreation Areas (SVRA), and revenue derived from a calculation of the motor vehicle fuel tax paid for fuel used in off-highway recreation.  In 2007, SB-742 was approved by a near unanimous vote and changed the motor vehicle fuel tax revenue to be derived from a calculation based on the actual number of OHV recreation-related public land visitor-use-days.

California OHV - the next round

The ink is dry on the California budget and details are coming into focus.  So, what about the OHMVR program?  What about the future of OHV recreation in the state of California? The OHMVR budget is linked to the California State Parks budget. Now, for the rest of the story...

While news headlines claim nearly all California State Parks will remain open, the angst caused by Senator Simitian and the California State Parks Foundation ended as no benefit to the Parks and a detriment to OHMVR program.

Letter of support for Daphne Greene

In 2012, the California Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division will celebrate its 40th anniversary. In 1972, and now, the citizens of California recognize the importance of a well-managed program that provides OHV opportunities while protecting the environment. Continuing that tradition of excellence is important and Daphne Greene has been a big part in contributing to the financial health of the California OHV Program.

Governor Brown's recent announcement that Daphne Greene's appointment as Deputy Director of the OHMVR Division will be terminated on December 31, 2011 is of great concern to all off-highway enthusiastists. Please send a letter and offer your support of the reappointment of Daphne Greene as Deputy Director of the OHMVR Division within California State Parks. Daphne has provided strong leadership and integrity to build a model program that is solvent with self-sustaining funding from the user community.

Marines of the future

The Associated Press published an article about the Post War Marines: smaller, less focused on land war. (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_AFTER_IRAQ_MARINES?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT)

I found the article interesting and informative.  I have been following General Amos and read some of his past statements regarding his vision for the future of the Marines as that has a direct bearing on an issue that is important to me: expansion of 29 Palms Marine Base and Johnson Valley OHV Area.
