BLM Proposes Fee Increases at Eastern Sierra Campgrounds

BISHOP, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management Bishop Field Office is seeking public comment on proposed fee increases at campgrounds in the eastern Sierra.

The BLM is proposing to change the fee strategy and initially increase fees for the Tuttle Creek, Goodale Creek, Horton Creek and Pleasant Valley Pit campgrounds in Inyo County and the Crowley Lake campground in Mono County.

Summit Healthy Forest project proposed

USFS LogoKernville, CA, December 22, 2015 – Ongoing drought and beetle-infestation have killed many trees on Forest Service lands near homes, powerlines and along roadsides near the community of Alta Sierra. To promote public safety and forest health, the Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest is preparing a categorical exclusion for the Summit Healthy Forest Project (Summit CE), which will remove overstocked green trees, as well as trees that are dead and dying or pose hazards within 1,100 acres of Forest land around the Alta Sierra community.

Recommended Wilderness List Released

USFS LogoForest Service shares draft evaluations of potential areas for wilderness recommendation in forest plan revisions

The U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Region released a draft evaluations of lands that may be suitable for recommendation and inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. This list covers Inyo, Sierra, and Sequoia National Forests.

No new wilderness areas are being designated at this time. Only the Congress can designate wilderness.

Species of Conservation Concern Comments Sought

USFS LogoThe U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Region is sharing additional information regarding our draft proposed species of conservation concern (SCC) lists as part of the land and resource management plan revision process for the Inyo, Sequoia and Sierra National Forests.

In July, we provided our draft proposed SCC lists and asked for public feedback on those documents. In response to the public feedback we received then, we are now sharing the screening criteria we used to develop the draft proposed lists.

Winter Road Closures and Snow-play Opportunities

USFS LogoSequoia National Forest, CA – Forest Service officials have implemented a seasonal road closure for high elevation areas of the Sequoia National Forest due to the recent and anticipated storm activity.  Most Forest Service administered roads on the Hume Lake and Western Divide Ranger Districts are now closed for public safety and resource protection.  Highway 180 between the Hume Lake cutoff and Cedar Grove was closed early this year because of the Rough Fire.  Tulare County closed the roads leading into Balch Park and Mountain Home, along with the Western Divide Highway and Parker Pass.

Wild and Scenic River Comments Sought

USFS LogoForest Service shares Wild and Scenic Rivers inventory and eligibility findings as part of forest plan revisions

VALLEJO, California, December 15, 2015 - The U.S. Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Region is sharing our Wild and Scenic Rivers inventory, eligibility and classification findings for the Inyo, Sequoia and Sierra National Forests. We completed this process as part of our efforts to revise the land and resource management plans (forest plans) for these national forests.
